Michael Reynolds and the Earthship: The Homestead That Tries to Run Itself
A New Mexico Taos architect spent fifty years turning old tires into houses. The idea still has a following because it answers the same question every homesteader asks: how much of this place can we handle ourselves?
Drive west of Taos on a high desert mesa and the houses stop looking like houses. They look like something that grew out of the dirt and decided to keep the bottles. South-facing glass. Bermed north walls. Solar panels on a metal roof. A wall of colored glass bottles catching the afternoon light like a church window built by a salvage yard.
That is an Earthship. The man who named it, designed it, fought for it, and still lives in one is American architect Michael E. Reynolds.
He is not a quiet academic. He is the reason a certain kind of homesteader talks about pounding dirt into tires the way other people talk about putting up a pole barn. Some of that following is earned. Some of it is the romance of a guy who would rather argue with a building inspector than a utility bill. Both parts are the story.

What an Earthship actually is
Strip away the Instagram and an Earthship is a passive-solar, earth-sheltered house built to do six jobs without leaning on the grid: stay comfortable, make power, catch water, handle sewage, grow some food, and do it with materials that are already lying around. Reynolds calls the practice Earthship Biotecture. The building is supposed to behave like a vessel that works with weather instead of fighting it.
The the concept is simple enough to explain over a tailgate and a cold beverage.
Used tires get packed with the dirt you just excavated until each one is a three-hundred-pound brick. Stack those in staggered courses and you have a load-bearing wall with the thermal mass of a cave. In the Northern Hemisphere the long glass face points south. Sun hits the mass all day. The mass gives the heat back at night. In a well-built example, indoor temperatures hang near the low 70s when the mesa outside is doing whatever the mesa feels like. Bottles and cans get mortared into non-load-bearing walls for light and decoration. The north side gets buried. The roof catches rain and snowmelt.
Water runs through the house more than once. Roof to cistern. Cistern through a filter for drinking and washing. Gray water into interior planters that grow food and clean the water again. That water flushes the toilet. Black water goes to an on-site treatment system. Power comes from solar, sometimes a little wind, stored in batteries. The greenhouse is not a sunroom for show. It is part of the plumbing.
That is the pitch in plain language: a house that tries to be its own well, its own furnace, its own septic, and part of its own pantry.
It is also a lot of sledgehammer work. A medium two-bedroom build can eat something like 1,400 tires. Somebody has to fill every one of them. Earthships are not a weekend project with a rented trailer and a YouTube playlist. They are a construction method with a philosophy attached.

Reynolds grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, watching a father who kept and reused things. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s architecture school in 1969, then headed for Taos instead of a downtown firm. Cheap land. Big sky. A town already filling up with people who wanted a different script.
In 1972 he built the Thumb House out of wired-together beer and soda cans. That was the first public version of the idea that garbage could be structure. He later patented a can-brick method and spent the next decades iterating: cans, then bottles, then earth-rammed tires, then whole off-grid systems. He started calling the houses Earthships in the late 1980s. Communities followed including REACH, STAR, and the Greater World Earthship Community on hundreds of acres outside Taos, which is still the pilgrimage site.
The establishment did not throw him a parade. Clients complained. Counties issued stop-work orders. New Mexico pulled his architect’s license around 2000 after fights over siting, unfinished work, and methods that did not match the codebook. He kept building anyway and started calling himself a biotect. In 2007 the state passed a testing-site law that let counties carve out rural parcels for experimental sustainable construction. That is as close as this story gets to a legal thriller, and it is enough: the houses were easier to invent than to permit.
He turned 80 in 2025 still making the same case he made as a kid out of school. The grid is useful until it is not. Waste is a design problem if you treat it like one. A house should earn its keep. People who spent decades calling him a desert crank now show up for tours. He has said the ugly duckling line himself. Give a man fifty years and a mesa, and the joke sometimes changes sides.
Why he has a cult following
Homesteaders do not usually collect architects. They collect methods that cut a bill or a trip to town. Reynolds gathered a following because the Earthship is a complete answer in a field full of half-answers.
It looks like a decision. Not a slightly greener subdivision with better insulation and the same meter on the wall. The tire wall, the bottle glass, the indoor banana tree in January and it photographs like a manifesto. Documentary crews, architecture students, off-grid dreamers, and disaster-relief crews have all made the drive to Taos. Earthship Biotecture runs an academy that teaches the build to people who never sat through a studio critique. Versions of the idea have gone up in dozens of countries. Some are humble. Some are luxury rentals with a jungle in the hall.
There is also the outlaw flavor, and we might as well say it. A man who lost a license for building the thing he believed in is catnip for people who already distrust the utility company and the planning office. That energy can be useful. It can also skip the part where a wet climate, a shady lot, or a county inspector turns the dream into a very expensive berm. Failed builds and unhappy buyers are part of the record too. The durable piece is simpler. Reynolds told people their trash and their sunlight were building materials. A lot of homesteaders were already halfway there with salvage lumber, rain barrels, and a greenhouse. He just drew the whole house around it.

Why building this way can be good for the place you live
You do not have to join a mesa commune to steal the useful parts.
Houses use a shocking amount of energy just to stay in the human temperature range. Thermal mass, good orientation, and earth sheltering cut that load before anyone buys a gadget. Catching roof water and using it more than once takes pressure off wells and municipal systems. Putting scrap tires and bottles into a wall keeps them out of a pile that never goes away. Growing food in the same envelope that treats gray water is the homestead instinct with better plumbing. None of that requires a speech. It is just fewer trucks, fewer therms, and fewer things that only work when the pole down the road is happy.
The planet-scale version is the same math with more zeros. Construction is hungry for new material and constant fuel. A building that holds heat, drinks rain, and eats waste is one less building doing the opposite. That is the honest case for sustainable building: use what the site already offers, waste less of what you imported, and design the house so it still works when the truck does not come
It is not magic. An Earthship in a cloudy, wet, north-facing hole is a damp science project. Permits in most counties were written for stick-frame houses tied to public water and sewer. If you ever get serious, talk to the building official before you buy a mountain of tires. A few places have issued permits. Many have not. That is a phone call, not a crusade. Most readers here will never pound 1,400 tires. You might still steal the south glass, the rain cistern, the indoor planter that is doing two jobs, and the habit of asking what a building can do before you ask what it can buy.
